LG further teases 55-inch OLED TV ahead of CES

LG has offered more details of its ultrathin 55-inch OLED TV set ahead of its private, media-only, unveiling at CES. The prototype TV, which in addition to currently holding the title as the largest OLED TV yet produced, is said to be much more color accurate than other OLED displays that can be prone to unnatural color gamut and hue shifting when viewed at different angles.

LG claims that it has achieved this by applying its unique 4-color pixel and color refiner technology. Where typically other manufacturers use only red, green and blue pixels, LG also employs white pixels and a special algorithm to improves color hues and tones.

As the display is an OLED, it is also capable of producing an infinite contrast ratio that also allows maintains image clarity when displaying dark lighting. Another major advantage of OLED over LED and LCD displays is that ghosting and image bleeding is eliminated as its response time is 1000 times faster.

The 55-inch panel also uses a different manufacturing technology to its smaller OLED counterparts. Instead of using low-temperature polysilicon, it uses an oxide thin-film transistor, which helps to keep costs in check and allows for the development of larger displays. The screen itself is just 5mm (0.20in) thick.

LG has not yet revealed when it plans on producing a shipping product, or how much it might cost.
