PS Vita gets very early homebrew code through PSP emulator

updated 04:55 pm EST, Sat December 31, 2011

PS Vita proof of concept app hack appears

The first steps to get homemade code running on the PS Vita have taken place after Japanese developer teck4, with elaboration by mamosuke, has shown a very early example. The "hello world" app runs in the PlayStation's PSP emulator and uses just hardware controls. While rough, it lets gamers change the color and movement of the "snowfall" in a test scene.

More advanced apps running in the emulator are likely, but running native Vita code make take some time. The Vita uses a considerably different operating system and a much newer processor. Sony in its post-jailbreak era may equally have extra security measures to prevent unsanctioned apps from loading.

Future discoveries are likely to come when the Vita reaches the US, initially through the February 15 wave of First Edition pre-orders and a week later for everyone else. [via GameGaz and Wololo]
