Symbian has odd resurgence in web share as Android, iOS tie

StatCounter shows odd uptick in Symbian share

December StatCounter data has shown an unusual resurgence in Symbian on the web at the very end of 2011. Having dipped under 30 percent in October, Nokia's platform not only bounced back but nearly matched its high for the year at just over 33.5 percent in December. Most of the drop appeared to come at the expense of iOS, which shed a point and a half to reach 22.6 percent.

The decline was still enough to put iOS over Android. Google saw its growth suddenly stop after October and even bring it down slightly to 21.8 percent.

RIM was on a consistent drop as the BlackBerry hit a new low of 7.8 points, while other platforms were effectively flat. Samsung's in-house Bada OS trailed the pack at just half a point of traffic.

StatCounter's data includes basic feature phone platforms from Samsung and Sony Ericsson and may explain the Symbian resurgence in spite of a long decline in smartphones. Nokia still commands the entry cellphone market that defines the developing world, giving it extra web share whenever an upswing of users get cellphones for the first time.

The split also shows that Android's presence online isn't as large as its device share. Apple is helped both by more frequent web use on its hardware as a whole as well as much larger user bases for tablets and media players, where Android is just a niche player. [via Royal Pingdom]
