PS Vita desktop app may force device updates, Internet link

updated 01:25 pm EST, Thu December 29, 2011

PS Vita content manager app may limit use

A discovery earlier in the week has found that Sony's Content Manager app for the PS Vita may be overzealous in trying to curb the perceived piracy threat. Wololo found that the Windows app for sideloading apps and media wouldn't load if a Vita attached to the PC wasn't using the latest firmware. It also wouldn't run if the PC was offline.

The Internet component has a reason to run for getting purchases and other content from PSN. In tandem with the need to have the latest version of the Vita firmware, though, it implies that Sony is following the scorched earth policy towards firmware it had from the PS3, where it wants to prevent any changes under the claims that the code could be used for cheats or piracy.

Sony hasn't commented on the apparent requirements, and it's possible that it may have had bugs or compatibility issues it wanted addressed before any further updates. Its past hardline stance on customization would contradict that point of view.
