Windows Phone roadmap backs Tango in spring, Apollo in fall

updated 09:50 am EST, Wed December 28, 2011

Windows Phone roadmap gives Tango window

An uncovered roadmap may have solidified Microsoft's Windows Phone update plans. Its first update of 2012, Tango, is now penned in for spring in WMPowerUser's copy. Apollo, possibly Windows Phone 8, would arrive in the fall.

The top-level overview gives few details as to what each update would involve but do support earlier leaks. Tango would be for "products with the best prices," or shorthand for the budget smartphones that Nokia and Chinese firms like ZTE would want. Apollo may be the update to bring the promised dual-core and LTE devices as it would offer "competitive superphones."

The late 2012 update would also help improve "business" and "increase overall volume," Microsoft said, although it's not clear what those would entail.

Microsoft is currently in a rush to expand its market share and is hoping both to counter low-end Android devices as well as catch up to Android and the iPhone after two years of being behind in hardware features.
