Nintendo opens up to DLC for the first time
Nintendo has joined [sub. req.] its competition in offering paid DLC for its 3DS gaming titles. Users now have the option of purchasing additional levels and other downloadable content for games where offered by developers. The first 3DS game set to get the treatment is Fire Emblem.
The company recently notched up 4 million sales of the 3DS in its home market of Japan. Sales of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart7, although no announcements of downloadable content for those two titles has yet emerged. Nintendo is also rumored to be carrying the concept of DLC through to its forthcoming Wii console successor, the Wii U, when it launches in the middle of 2012.
Historically, Nintendo has held off the from entering this segment of the gaming market, but it is likely the success of in-app purchases on the iOS platform, as well as its popularity on the Xbox and PlayStation franchises has encouraged the company to change its tact on the matter. With the company struggling financially for the first time in many years, it is likely that Nintendo, along with its game developers are looking to extend the value-added component of sales to existing customers of any given gaming title.
