Archos to offer DECT phone, Android tablet hybrid

updated 02:55 pm EST, Mon December 26, 2011

Home phone that can run some apps

Having only just passed FCC muster, Archos is preparing to offer the Archos 35 home smart phone, a combination it calls part DECT handset and part Android "tablet." The unit fuses smartphone features in a home-phone cordless DECT phone that runs Android (Froyo 2.2) on a 3.5-inch touchscreen that can play music, record video, surf the web (via Wi-Fi) and run compatible Android apps such as Angry Birds.

The unit is compatible with standard phone lines and ADSL boxes and its phone function uses the DECT 1.9GHz frequency. The 3.5-inch screen has a low 272x480 resolution but offers on-screen called name and number display, MP3 ringtones, touchscreen dialpad, and basic web and email surfing.

Contacts from an Android mobile phone can be transferred to the Archos phone through a Micro USB port and an integrated application. It features 8GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot for additional storage, and seems aimed at those who want smartphone features but don't have a need for a mobile phone and wish to avoid the contract costs associated with them.

Via its web browser, the phone can download and install some Android apps that are compatible with v2.2 or lower. The phone can play back MPEG4 and other types of video, JPG and BMP images, and MP3, WAV, FLAC and OGG music files. It has a built-in VGA camera and microphone, making it possible to use a program like Skype for videoconferencing.

The Archos Smart Home Phone is compatible with both Windows systems (Windows 2000 or higher) and Mac (OS X 10.4 or later), both in mass storage mode for adding photos, videos and music. The Wi-Fi receiver is 802.11b, g and n compatible. The unit is not yet available for sale but is expected to retail for $159.
