Nokia explains dropping Symbian name from Belle

updated 01:25 pm EST, Fri December 23, 2011

Nokia sheds a little more light on Symbian rename

After being saddled with questions about why it dropped the Symbian name from the latest OS update for its smartphones, Nokia has responded in a blog post. Nokia's Head of Symbian Product Marketing, Vesa Jutila, wrote that the Symbian Belle name is still being used for developers, with the Nokia Belle name reserved for end-users. The explanation isn't very informative, however.

Jutila went on to say that the update's two delays, from the fourth quarter of 2011, to January, and now to February, was due to Nokia's wish to bring "such a big difference in the user experience" to millions of users in multiple countries at the same time.

Nokia also revealed the update will be coming to the Nokia 500, which wasn't confirmed before. Nokia Belle is already on the 701, 700 and 600 phones meant for China, and due to arrive on the N8, E7, E6, X7, C6-01, C7, and Oro phones in February.

Most notably, Nokia Belle doubles the number of home screens from three to six. It also has more functional home screen widgets, with the e-mail widget giving users more information at a glance, and a number of other, more detailed changes.

    Bad move for Nokia

I do still miss Nokia. It is still the best phone for making phone calls, and sending text messages. But it is not a computer, nor an e-reader. I have switched to iPhone now. But really hope Nokia will stage a come back. They really should focus on what have made them successful, rather than switching names! Any management big on name switching should be fired. There are apps for iPhone which mimic Nokia's interface, such as the PhoneBook Plus. I am wondering if they can resurrect Nokia from the best easy to use features rather than changing names.
