Nest teardown shows Apple-like detail

updated 07:35 pm EST, Thu December 22, 2011

Thermostat takes cues from Apple gadgets

The Nest thermostat, which was created by iPod pioneer Tony Fadell, has already been dissected by at least one early buyer. DIY electronics retailer Sparkfun purchased one of the unique thermostats to tear apart, revealing internal components that show an attention to detail that is commonly found inside Apple's mobile products such as iPods and iPhones.

The device integrates a wide range of sensors, including a proximity sensor, movement sensor and hygrometer to determine humidity. Interestingly enough, the components include a small lithium-polymer battery. It is unclear if the battery serves as supplementary power to the HVAC system during Wi-Fi communication, or works to retain memory through a power outage.

The teardown also revealed that a ZigBee antenna appears to complement the Wi-Fi radio. ZigBee technology is utilized to communicate with other in-home equipment such as light switches and electrical meters.

It is unclear if the company plans to expand Nest functionality to add ZigBee support.

    Steve would be proud ...

    ... or furious. :)

But, I think, proud. Fadell has obviously learned from his time at Apple. If I didn't rent, I would buy one of these things in an instant.

    Got one it's great ...

It's truly cool. Went away for few days; came back from the mountains and used our iPhone to connect to our Nest via wi-fi to warm up the house 45min before returning. It's still in "learning" mode, as we've had it only a week. Many messageboards out there indicate it is a good fit for many homes, but perhaps not for some -- so perhaps not for everyone. Feature packed, yes -- but the beauty lies in its simplicity.

    gee

Wow, the guy who was the main guy behind the iPod somehow made something else that has the same characteristics? Man, how'd that happen.

Of course, I guess we're also supposed to go on the belief that it wasn't this guy who brought those design ideas to apple, but apple who gave him those ideas.

    Still not clear ...

If this thing only works with Imperial units, or can it also switch to Metric; i.e. Will it work in Celsius? I'd love to know.

    Celsius? Yes!

    From Nest's web site:
Does Nest display the temperature in Celsius?
Yes. On Nest, the temperature can be displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. You can switch between them in Settings in the Nest Menu.
