Sony sells 321,400 PS Vita consoles in two days

Sony is estimated to have sold 321,400 PS Vita handheld gaming consoles on its hyped launch in Japan in just two days. Research firm Enterbrain, which arrived at the figure, said that despite the strength of the launch, this actually fell short of the mark achieved by the Nintendo 3DS. In the first two days after it went on sale, Nintendo shifted 371,000 3DS consoles by comparison.

However, after the strong initial success of the Nintendo 3DS, a lack of must-have launch titles quickly saw sales momentum stall and resulted in a Nintendo slashing the price of its console from $250 to $170 just six months after its launch. Sony has learnt from Nintendo's misstep and has ensured that it has some stellar titles on hand including the next installment of the hugely popular Uncharted franchise. In total, Sony has managed to work with its developers to get 24 titles on the shelves alongside the launch of its next-gen portable.

However, although Sony and Nintendo enjoy the lion's share of the dedicated mobile gaming device market, their biggest challenge lies not necessarily with each other, but with the rise of mobile gaming. The charge was led by the iPhone and the iPod touch, which revolutionized mobile gaming, particularly with the vast array of cheap, casual, but high-quality gaming titles available on the iTunes App Store.

With Android mobile devices getting in on the act too, recent analysis by Flurry Analytics shows that at best, Sony and Nintendo will share 42 percent of mobile gaming revenue. This is half what it was just two years ago when the companies had a seeming strangle-hold on the mobile gaming market with an 81 percent share of mobile gaming revenue. [via Digital Trend]
