Google rumored making glasses with heads-up display

updated 08:25 pm EST, Mon December 19, 2011

Wearable computer would look like thick glasses

Google may be close to revealing a heads-up computing device. 9to5 Google has pieced together several "open secrets" circulating throughout the Google community as well as other data points, and asserts that the company is in the late prototype stage of developing wearable computing devices that take on, for the most part, the form-factor of thick-rimmed reading glasses. Google is reportedly working on the project in its ultra-secret Google X laboratory.

The claim was a response to claims of work by both Google and Apple on wearable peripherals that worked in conjunction with iPhones and Android smartphones. While Google may be dedicating some effort to this, the company's real intent is to develop a stand-alone computing device that will communicate directly with the cloud, according to the tips.

If a smartphone were involved, it would be the actual peripheral, providing Internet access to the glasses through a Wi-Fi or low-power Bluetooth 4.0 connection. With this setup, users would be able to see information on the glasses' see through display lenses using GPS and Google's location-based services.
