Report: iPhone 4S a quarter of all smartphone sales in UK

updated 08:30 pm EST, Mon December 19, 2011

All iPhone models said to be taking 37 percent

In what might be seen as a portent of worldwide sales, figures from a British research firm obtained by the Financial Times indicates that the iPhone 4S is dominating the market for smartphones in the UK, making up 25 percent of all smartphone sales in the four weeks leading up to December 9th. Combined with the other iPhone models, Apple's phones made up 37 percent of all smartphone sales.

Nokia phones, particularly the Windows Phone 7.5-based Lumia line, have failed to get into the top 10 despite a $30 million advertising campaign, but the company has said that it expected uptake would be slow as, unlike the iPhone, there is no previous generation Lumia to have built an audience. Despite being well-reviewed, the Lumia is said to have sold no better than standard Nokia feature phones during the month-long survey.

While the iPhone 4S and the other available iPhones -- including the two-and-a-half-year-old iPhone 3GS -- all made the top 15, Samsung's Galaxy S II took second place, and three versions of the Blackberry Curve were also seen in the top 10, indicating that competition is still healthy. The strong sales of the Curve is seen as excellent news for the company, given its recent problems with Playbook sales, its delay of next-generation phones until late next year, and a service outage that affected customers worldwide earlier in the fall. The latest Blackberry smartphone, the Bold 9900, also saw increased sales but did not make it into the top 10.

Great Britain's smartphone market has opened up enormously over the past two years, with Ofcom research figures showing that smartphone ownership doubled between February 2010 and August 2011, now up to 46 percent of all mobile handset users. The strong holiday sales from Apple reinforce recent reports that the iPhone had outsold all combined Android models in the UK in November and had a 43 percent total share of the smartphone market. Over a third

Last time I checked, 37 percent was more than a third. THAT is the real story here, not just the 4S part of it.
