Nielsen shows game console usage numbers, bumps
Streaming and video-on-demand on game consoles has seen a sharp increase over the past year, media researcher Nielsen revealed after performing a study in October. Users now spend 14 percent of their time on the Xbox 360, 15 percent on the PS3, and 33 percent on the Wii watching videos from services such as Netflix, Hulu, MLB Network, and ESPN3.
The study also found that the overall use of the gaming consoles is seven percent higher during the first half of 2011 than the same time period last year. The streaming increase is incrementally related to the overall bump in console use.
Nielsen further broke down usage, with the Xbox 360 used 34 percent of its time for online gaming, the PS3 at 22 percent of DVD and Blu-ray viewing, and Wii users involved in offline gaming 55 percent of the time.
Video numbers are likely to increase further next year, as available content is likely to expand. Microsoft added a wide range of video services with the fall 2011 Xbox 360 Dashboard update, including live and on-demand video options through partnerships with TV networks, cable, and satellite providers as well as dedicated services like Vudu and YouTube.
