Rumor: Nikon D4 to carry ISO 204,800, take XQD cards

updated 10:50 pm EST, Sun December 11, 2011

Nikon D4 gets more tangible details.

New rumors from historically accurate sources may have narrowed down the details of Nikon's long-expected D4 full-frame camera. The DSLR would only see a modest resolution upgrade to 16.2 megapixels, but Nikon Rumors heard it could be the first camera with the new XQD card format. Combined with a regular CompactFlash slot, it could have support for very high speed storage without shedding legacy support.

Other upgrades would be more evolutionary. Face detection would come along and purportedly work in the viewfinder, not just the LCD. Previously hinted-at improved video from the D800 might carry over here and would include 1080p video and, at least for the D4, uncompressed video over HDMI. Ethernet would be built into the body to let pro photographers tether at high speeds.

Pure image quality changes would center on a widened sensitivity range where ISO 100 to 102,400 are available in normal shooting, not just special modes; the overrides would be ISO 50 and a record-setting ISO 204,800. Autofocusing would play its own part, with an updated 51-point system, a wider EV -2.0 exposure detection range, and nine cross sensors good up to an f8 aperture. Continuous shooting would reach a high 11 frames per second, presumably at full resolution.

While launch timing hasn't been settled, the imminent arrival of the PMA photography show in sync with CES in January could see the D4 unveiled on January 10. The D800 might show alongside and could create a stark contrast where it focuses on resolution where the D4 focuses on low-light sensitivity.
