DingleBerry rooting tool arrives for BlackBerry PlayBook

Hack arrives ahead of official patch

Unofficial developers have finally released the promised rooting tool for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The utility, referred to as DingleBerry, enables users to gain root access to the tablet. The release appears to open the door to further modification outside of RIM's blessing, though hobbyist developers have only just begun to explore the potential capabilities.

Recent demonstrations showed the hack used to implement a workaround for Hulu's device restrictions, which block the streaming video service from unmodified PlayBooks. In a Twitter post, DingleBerry developer Chris Wade suggests the initial release only brings root access, however, without any other features such as Hulu.

DingleBerry is currently available for Windows machines, while a Mac release is said to be "coming soon." RIM has already promised to investigate the utility, suggesting the company will attempt to patch the security loophole through an upcoming software update. [via CrackBerry]
