T-Mobile loads BlackBerry with Carrier IQ against RIM's will

updated 07:30 pm EST, Sun December 4, 2011

T-Mobile puts CIQ on BlackBerry, Galaxy, myTouch

A leaked memo to T-Mobile staff has confirmed that it and possibly other carriers are contradicting RIM's policies on phone tracking. Although BlackBerry designs leave RIM without Carrier IQ, TmoNews saw word that the Curve 9360, Torch 9810, and Bold 9900 all have the diagnostic app loaded inside. While not necessarily suggesting that RIM was misleading, it does show that the company has given away control to the carriers.

Several other phones are included, such as all of LG's myTouch phones and DoublePlay, Samsung's Exhibit II 4G and Galaxy S II, and the HTC Amaze 4G.

In pushing the note, T-Mobile reiterated the limited scope of information it claims to get from the phones. It tracks app launch failures, battery life, and dropped calls. No messages or voice calls slip out, T-Mobile said.

Carrier IQ has stressed that it doesn't log personal info itself. In making deals with carriers, though, it risks software conflicts with hardware makers that could leak info unintentionally, possibly including HTC.
