Spotify says iPad app a 'priority,' open to its own devices

updated 12:05 pm EST, Thu December 1, 2011

Spotify may get first tablet app with iPad soon

Spotify UK managing director Chris Maples in an interview Thursday hinted that an iPad native app was coming soon. Although hesitant to give details, he explained to Pocket-lint that it was "a priority" and "absolutely in the pipeline." To date, Spotify has only had a smartphone-sized app outside of the desktop.

He was also open to the possibility of Spotify making its own devices, although he stressed that it wasn't a direct clue as to plans. Spotify was "absolutely not" in hardware now but could get in if it thought it could do better hardware. The company currently faces an uphill battle in the area as it would have to produce its own smartphone or tablet, given the decline of traditional MP3 players.

On the company's new music app platform, Maples stressed that the company would take a more Apple-like model to allowing apps rather than Android. Spotify wanted apps that were "naturally intuitive" and "work seamlessly" with the service, he said, and not Android's tendency towards many cloned or redundant apps.

Although saying Spotify would be an open platform, the director stressed that the in-jukebox app platform would have "high quality thresholds" and would only allow in apps it thought would contribute.

He hoped the apps would be available on Android and iOS, although he didn't say whether or not he expected conflicts with Apple's polices on in-app stores. A current policy of making all apps free might help, since they could be considered features rather than paid content that Apple wants to sell through iTunes.
