Ignis designs high-res, non-pentile AMOLED display

Ignis Innovations has announced that it has developed the technology for a high density, high-resolution AMOLED display. It reaches the "Retina Display" benchmark of 300 pixels per inch, and is one of the first to do so with an AMOLED display. Its introduction should usher in the next generation of high-resolution AMOLED displays to the smartphone segment.

In addition to reaching the 300ppi yardstick, the company has also managed to do so using a 'true RGB' pixel layout, as opposed to the 'pentile-type' that shares red, green and blue sub-pixels with other pixels. The technology uses current manufacturing techniques.

While Ignis, like ARM, does not manufacture its designs but licences their tech to other companies. High on the list of likely licensees would be Samsung and LG Display among others. [via OLED Display]

that's my vote on how long it will take for someone to claim that THIS is the tech that will be in the displays for the next iPad
