Government permit only remaining step

China Unicom is effectively ready to sell the iPhone 4S, according to MIC Gadget. "We will start sales once we get the certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology," Unicom sales executive Yu Yingtao is quoted as saying. "It's not up to us. We've already done all of our preparations, we're just waiting on the permit."

Some regional Unicom branches have reportedly already begun taking bookings, even though there is still no formal release date for the phone. The 4S passed wireless tests last week, but is currently said to be waiting on a network access permit. That may take approximately one more week.
