Acer, Lenovo, and Samsung line up for Tegra 3

A new rumor from the portable industry has Acer, Lenovo, and Samsung lining up their quad-core Tegra 3 tablets for the first quarter of 2012 for what may be a repeat of the conflict with Apple. While not specific on which models were coming, the Digitimes tips suggested Acer's Iconia Tab A510 and A700, the upcoming Lenovo tablet, and a future Samsung Galaxy Tab variant would all be unveiled at CES or Mobile World Congress. Prices wouldn't dip significantly below the high end at between $459 to $599.

While they should be much more powerful than their dual-core ancestors, the new wave may not fare any better against the iPad 3, the proclaimed sources said. Corroborated by leaks, they wouldn't be fundamentally different than their predecessors and would be trading mostly on their speed. ASUS' Transformer Prime may be an example, as it's thinner and faster but not a reinvention.

They speculated that, potentially with the exception of Amazon, non-iPad tablets might be limited to 10 to 15 percent of the market.

Through multiple rumors, Apple is believed to be at least staying competitive with if not beating most of the second-generation Android tablets that are due to arrive. It's unknown if the A6 processor's presumed four cores will be fast enough to outpace the Tegra 3's four-plus-one, but signs have emerged from inside and outside of Apple that the next iPad may have a 2048x1536 display, sharper than the 1920x1200 screen expected on a slate like the Iconia Tab A700.
