Sony wants PS4 to launch close to next Xbox

Sony acknowledges late launch of PS4 a problem

PlayStation Europe CEO Jim Ryan said he doesn't want to repeat being behind competitors in the launch of its next-generation gaming console. Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Ryan said it'd be "undesirable" for the PS4 to be "significantly later than the competition." Nintendo's Wii U should be out in 2012 while the next Xbox is expected to be introduced next year as well, with a launch possibly due in 2013.

In comparison, there are few indications pointing to the next PlayStation console. Sony's financial situation is also not a strong indication of that likelihood. Ryan himself said that Sony still has a lot of "unfinished business on PS3." He then referred to the price drop of the PS2, and how the majority of its sales came after its price was dropped to its lowest level, at $99.

A first-party Sony studio was recently said to have began developing software for the PS4. The same developer is reportedly also involved in developing graphics technology for the console. The same report said developer Guerrilla Games is developing the next installment in the Killzone series for the PS4.
