Penguin brings only older e-books back to Kindle lending

Penguin has selective return to e-book lending

Penguin has partly reversed course on its decision to pull e-books from lending. Library partner OverDrive said mid-week that older books were now options once again for virtual library borrowing on at least the Kindle. New titles, however, were still being left out of the collection on any e-reader.

It's not evidence how comprehensive the return is, although it's presumed that new e-books won't show on any store.

The publisher when it backed out earlier in the week cited "content security" as the primary factor without elaborating much further. Its most likely concern is piracy, as it may be worried that a pirate source could borrow a recent e-book, strip out copy protection, and share the book with a much larger pool of readers.
