Nook Simple Touch gets white, price cut on Friday

Barnes & Noble revealed that its Black Friday sale will also bring a rare version of the Nook Simple Touch. A Limited Edition version of the touchscreen e-reader will arrive only in physical stores, and only on November 25, with a white border as its signature feature. Price will be its real difference: at $79, it will be both $20 less than the regular price and match the price of the basic Kindle while giving features closer to the ad-sponsored $99 Kindle Touch.

Other discounts will include drops of as much as 44 percent on Nook add-ons as well as giveaways, such as giving a screen protector for free to those who get a power kit for the Nook Color or Nook Tablet. Those who buy a Lyra Light will get an extra power adapter for the Simple Touch. More broadly, anyone who buys a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card will get a $10 card of their own to use on something else in the store.

The Simple Touch doesn't have extras such as a browser, but the absence of ads may appeal to those who don't want the Kindle discount. It carries a six-inch E Ink Pearl screen like its rival and uses a technique that speeds up reading by cutting back on the number of complete screen refreshes. Barnes & Noble also promises an Amazon-beating two-month battery life.
