New push into mobile clients for major platforms

Microsoft Australia has confirmed on its Twitter feed that the company would soon be launching mobile versions of its corporate IM program Microsoft Lync for Android, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry and iOS. The program, formerly known as Microsoft Office Communicator, is enterprise-level instant messaging that includes voice and video over IP, conferencing, collaboration, file sharing and full integration with Microsoft Office via a secure local Lync server.

The program is already available in desktop clients for both Mac and Windows, though the Mac version has not been updated to work with the latest 10.7.2 version of Lion yet. It utilizes a local server for secure communications and supports SIP, TLS and SRTP for encrypted media traffic.

Lync offers advanced collaboration features through PowerPoint and Whiteboard documents as well as desktop sharing and Windows application sharing. It can also relay messages to non-corporate IM clients such as Yahoo, AIM, MSN and other services.

The new versions are expected to extend the security and AV capabilities to mobile devices, and are expected to arrive just before or just after the end of the year.

i call BS on this one

here is what I know for a fact, the OS X version of Lync is very much functional on 10.7.2 and no I don't mean communicator. In fact I have Lync:Mac 2011 running at the moment and have had it running for about a month now. You need to be a corporate/volume client to get it though and there was un update earlier which supposedly addresses some stability issues.
In terms of functionality ... it's finally getting closer to the Windows version but there are some minor things missing. You can only use the corporate photo and cannot change it like you can on Windows and couple of other small things. But I can't wait for the iOS one to come out so hurry up MS!

Lync works just fine on 10.7.2 after the 14.0.1 update is applied
