updated 06:55 pm EST, Tue November 22, 2011

32GB variant sells for $500

ASUS has finally started to take pre-orders for its Transformer Prime tablet, which is expected to be the first on the market to be outfitted with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 chipset. Customers in the US and Canada can place an early order for the 32GB variant in several different colors, though the optional notebook dock and 64GB edition have yet to surface.

The tablet features a 10.1-inch IPS+ display with 1280x800 resolution, housed in a brushed stainless case taht measures 8.3mm thick. Other hardware features include an eight-megapixel primary camera that shoots 1080p video, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing sensor, 1GB of RAM, GPS, and a 22Wh battery claimed to reach 12 hours without the dock.

Despite rumors pointing to Android 4.0 at launch, the first round of shipments will be outfitted with Android 3.2 and await a later upgrade to the latest version of Google's mobile OS.

The 32GB pre-order model sells for $500 in the US and Canada, with shipments expected to begin on December 5.
