RIM confirms BlackBerry PlayBook $199 fire sale for US too

BlackBerry PlayBook hits 199 for limited time

RIM on Monday confirmed that its $199 BlackBerry PlayBook sale was available in the US. Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Radio Shack, Staples, and Walmart stores, as well as carriers Cincinnati Bell and Sprint, are dropping prices by $300 across the board, starting at $199. The promo lasts for a "limited time" that isn't specified, but might run until the same December 1 as in Canada.

Not all of the stores are currently reflecting the new price online.

The discount comes just weeks after a drop to $300 and supports beliefs that the PlayBook may still have problems selling even at lower prices. Among its newer problems is the arrival of the Amazon Kindle Fire, which normally costs $199 and is based on the PlayBook's own hardware, differing just in build quality and a lower 8GB of storage.

Most of RIM's long-term problems have been attributed to its decision to rush the PlayBook to stores for the sake of having an iPad competitor, but without basics such as native e-mail and calendars. It has delayed the needed update three times, moving it from late spring to summer, to fall, and now to February.

    Can't Wait...

    To put this on my shelf of failed computers, gadgets and companies. Maybe this will sit next to my Newton, Palm and iPaq handhelds.

    Same price

    Hey, its the same price as that POS Kindle. Except the BB might actually have more to offer at that same fire sale price. So if you have to choose which POS is better to buy, get neither one. Simply because they are both POS. Save your money till you have enough to get the real thing. The iPad.

    Hilarious bad logic

    It's hilarious to think RIM's sales problems are because they rushed the playbook to market before the native email client was ready - given the fact the native email client is still not ready and won't be available until February.

    I mean think about it from a pure logic perspective - as bad as the Playbook sales may be, they would be sitting at exactly zero, if the Playbook had never been released and wasn't going to be released until next February.

    So - yes, RIM has buried themselves with bad execution, but no, getting the product to market was not the problem - it was not getting something so simple as an email client ready.

    Yes, I get it, they would have had to have developed an email client that didn't use the BB network - and just had a native interface to plain old pop3 - but so what - confuse the issue at least. Instead they took the black eye.

    Support and EOL

    I wonder if RIM is going to continue their support (insert laugh here) after the sale? The End Of Life for this product seems planned to be at the end of the sale. Can the Playbook be used as a video monitor or a serving tray or a coaster?

    I doubt its EOL

    RIM doesn't have the choice to abandon its next generation OS - this is the only market RIM is in - abandoning the OS is just corporate suicide. This playbook OS is what has been renamed BBX - the next gen OS for its phones.

    I mean, if you say RIM is going out of business - OK, maybe they will - it's still a few months off, they have to go from being profitable to unprofitable first - but, they aren't going to can BBX.
