Microsoft East coast shop opens near Apple with Mac-using DJ

Microsoft opens Tysons Corner store near Apple

Microsoft on Thursday opened its first East coast store at the Tysons Corner mall in McLean, Virgnia. The company's location, deliberately located just moments away from Apple's first-ever retail store, saw an eight-hour line to get in. As with most of Microsoft's openings, though, the queue was primarily to get free tickets for a Microsoft-run Joe Jonas show the following Saturday, which only went out to opening day visitors.

The opening also carried an unintentional irony for Microsoft, since it revealed in a photo that the DJ hired to entertain the waiting line was using a Mac. Microsoft had him cover the back of his MacBook Pro with a "Microsoft Store" sheet.

Choosing Tysons Corner is a symbolic entrance into the East coast after focusing primarily on the West, most of all California and Washington state. Microsoft has signaled a more serious retail expansion in the next two to three years that would take it beyond just a retail experiment and into more direct retail competition with Apple.

    For everything else...

    MacBook? $999.
    Inkjet letter-size label at Kinko's? $3.95
Watching Ballmer double-down on Mylanta stock? Priceless.

    For everything else, there's Macintosh.

That's hilarious. Someone should ask the DJ if the store sells his laptop.

    What would Steve use

Steve used a ThinkPad for his keynotes when he returned to Apple.

    Does it matter anymore?

Macs run Windows. Macs run Office. Microsoft makes money selling both. This is not Apple versus Microsoft here or vice versa. This is Apple and Microsoft versus Google. Remember, Steve had a beef with Google in the end--and for good reason.

    Ah very Sad

Sad that Microsoft now as standard uses free concert tickets to force fake long lines at store events.... Hard to believe that a company with so much money doesnt start innovating to create customer interest, whats even more sad is that the idiot CEO allows it to happen. Microsoft stores will never be successful , ever and I don't get why Microsoft don't get it. Apple stores work because Apple sells it's own hardware and it's own software and can offer full support and warranty for all those products.

Microsoft on the other hand is selling 3rd party hardware that comes with all the grief and problems of 3rd party hardware running their software. Then theres the problem they are trying to support the software that has far more problems and bugs. Wont work.

Worst job in the world ... being a Microsoft store genius

    So embarrassing

This is so embarrassing on so many levels. Embarrassing for the desperate Mall Landlords to allow this BS to continue. Embarrassing for the employees that took the job because hey, jobs are SCARCE and you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living. Even if your have to clean up p*** (equivalent to working at MS Store). Embarrassing for MS PERIOD. PATHETIC! lol

Microsoft is trying really hard to gain any visibility with their store... They can try any tactics to bring crowd at opening day, but at the end free goodies doesn't make anyone buying
