RIM: 2012 BlackBerrys will be 'whimsical,' keep keyboards

updated 12:40 pm EST, Wed November 16, 2011

RIM talks design language for BBX phones

RIM in a pair of conversations has given clues as to the design language for its 2012-era BlackBerry phones. One interview with RIM's Industrial Design Senior VP Todd Wood told Pocket-lint that the phones would take a different tack than the serious designs that have dictated the BlackBerry for the past five years. These would be "charming, whimsical, and fun," he said.

Separately, an unnamed RIM contact explained that the company wasn't planning to drop keyboards from its lineup. Although BBX is based around touch, the company was "absolutely committed to building more great keyboard-based smartphones," he told Engadget.

The one possible look at a BBX phone so far, the rumored London, has shown a design that doesn't line up with Wood's description and is instead closer to the more serious Porsche Design P'9981. Regardless of the looks, the phones are expected to break up a largely unchanging look targeted at the workplace and acknowledge that designs for home users are increasingly more important.

    As long as they

don't forget sturdy and reliable, go for it!

It's a good way to differentiate and appeal to the buyer. Balance is key.

    Those attributes...

...are exactly what the remaining BlackBerry users self-identify with. Everyone else is already using iPhone and Android.

So you're saying "to h*** with the customer, since everyone else is doing x, so should RIM"? Seems silly. What's wrong with someone actually offering something different than the rest of the field?
