Qualcomm S1 and S4 get eight new variants

Qualcomm on Wednesday put out a large-scale expansion of its Snapdragon S1 and S4 chips beyond just chips like the 2.5GHz APQ8064. A full 12 of the mobile processors are coming, eight of which are in the high-end S4 family. These higher-end chips will include the MSM8660A, MSM8260A, MSM8630, MSM8230, MSM8627, MSM8227, APQ8060A, and APQ8030.

Although shy on what these chips would involve other than lower clock speeds than the 2.5GHz flagship, it did hint that these would have the most advanced 3G and 4G support of the mix. They should support 3G on EVDO, HSPA+, and TD-SCDMA as well as LTE and TD-LTE. At least the APQ chips are likely to go multi-core.

The S1 line gets new MSM7225A, MSM7625A, MSM7227A and MSM7627A chips. Their focuses are just on 3G and point mostly to clock speed boosts.

At least the new S4 processors are due to show in early 2012. HTC may be one of the most eager adopters and could use the chips in the rumored Zeta and Ville, either of which might be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in late February. Other smartphones and tablets should adopt Qualcomm's chip next.
