Nokia hints Windows 8 tablet in June, high-end Windows Phone

Nokia backs tablet plans and faster Windows Phone

Nokia's new French head Paul Amsellem may have inadvertently spoiled CEO Stephen Elop's teaser for a Windows 8 tablet in an interview with local paper Les Echos. He expected a Windows 8 tablet to be ready in June. The timing, if true, would support talk of a rushed Windows 8 launch to theoretically stem losses to Apple's iPad in the market.

Amsellem also hinted that the current Lumia phones were just mid-range models and that there would be high- and low-end models. "It's a bit like the BMW 5 series," he said. "We will soon have a complete range with a 7 series and 3 series."

He hoped Nokia would carve out 22 percent market share in France with Windows Phone and was following Microsoft's approach of targeting newcomers to smartphones. About 60 percent of the French didn't have a smartphone, Amsellem said. To help, Nokia was selling the Lumia 800 at a very aggressive price, undercutting the faster but costlier Galaxy S II and iPhone 4S.

While it was known Nokia was moving its smartphones into Windows Phone as it's phasing out its aging Symbian platform, the tablet initiative would have Nokia committing more to Microsoft than originally thought. The company had largely abandoned tablets after phasing out the Maemo-based N810, but all of its public talk has focused on its phone strategy. Microsoft may be hoping that Nokia's profile as a large mobile company may help get Windows 8 tablets much-needed recognition after Windows 7 tablets were almost instantly overtaken by the iPad and Android.

How Can You Spoil Anything ...

... about a Windows 8 Tablet that Windows 8 (especially a rushed Windows 8) and the tablet itself won't already spoil?

    I dunno

Windows phone 7 and Windows Tablet 7 were supposed to gain considerable market share and take market share away from Android and iOS... still waiting on that. As a matter of fact, didn't WinMo have something like 6.5% market share and now WP7 has... what... 1.5?

When are these people going to stop trying to fool themselves that they will ever have a competitor on the level of Android or iOS? Really? You are going to compare the Windows 8 phones and tablets you are "coming out with" to a BMW 7 Series?? What magical engineering has happened (that I haven't seen, mind you) behind the scenes to make you think you can make that boast about your platform and hardware?

Self-delusion, it's not just for breakfast anymore!

    Well said Foe

The big selling point of the Windows phone is that "it's get out of your way" with those live square icons as the interface. Will the Windows tablet make the same pitch? I think people use tablets differently from their smart phones, I know I use a browser 10 more on an iPad than on my iPhone. What advantages will the Windows tablets have over the iPad and the Droid tablets? Whatever it is it better be great to make up for lost mindshare and market share not to mention getting app developers on board. Will Microsoft make a version of Office for their tablet? If so will be be available for the iPad? It will be interesting to see what form factor it uses too.

    Hi end low end?

Anything that has Microsoft in it is associated with low end..... like Acer. Apple is the BMW, Nokia will always be the low end phones like Acer.

    same old MS

Rush an unfinished product to market, fix the problems later.
Except this isn't 1995, and there'll be hundreds of articles/blogs etc on the net complaining about everything that doesn't work within hours of release.
You can't fool'em like you used to, Balmie...

    Countless announcements

So Windows 8 is coming in June too? I don't get these guys. Instead of announcing these products that maybe coming 6 months later why not just keeping this as a secret and announcing it just before the shipping date. That happened with the countless announcements for the iPad killer tablets or in Microsoft jargon "slates"? Most of them never got shipped.
