Nokia Lumia 800 breaks Orange UK's Nokia-only records

Lumia 800 most popular for pre-orders at Orange

UK wireless provider Orange revealed on Wednesday that the just-released Nokia Lumia 800 now holds the record for the number of pre-orders for Nokia smartphones. Half of the pre-orders are from existing customers who also happen to be eligible for Nokia's free Xbox 360 promotion. The record-breaking customer interest comes ahead of Orange's marketing campaign.

Previously, the N95 and 5800 XpressMusic were the phones with the highest pre-order rates. The Lumia 800 is expected to be even more popular, as Orange plans to extend the free Xbox 360 offer to new customers as well. Its sales figures are likely to pale next to Android and iPhone demand, as both the N95 and 5800 XpressMusic were from 2007 and 2008, when the smartphone market was much smaller.

The Lumia 800 is Nokia's flagship Windows Phone offering, sporting a 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM. It has 16GB of storage space supplemented by 25GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage. It has a 3.7-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display and an eight-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. Its hardware doesn't compare as well to Android and iPhone hardware, where dual-core processors and more storage are normal, but Windows Phone also needs fewer resources to run smoothly.
