NPD data may point to 5.3 million Macs by end of quarter

updated 03:50 pm EST, Mon November 14, 2011

Macs only forecast to be 18 percent of revenue

Apple is on track to sell between 5.1 and 5.3 million Macs by the end of the holiday quarter, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The estimate is based on new data from the NPD Group, indicating that US Mac sales were up 19 percent year-over-year in October. Sales are only expected to accelerate in the run-up to Christmas; Wall Street consensus for the quarter sits at 5.2 million units.

Should Apple achieve Munster's quarterly target, it will represent a growth of 23 to 28 percent over the same period in 2010. The analyst moreover forecasts that Macs will account for just 18 percent of Apple's overall revenue. He comments that the NPD figures are a sign that Apple is off to a good start for the holidays.

iPods, though, are said to have fallen 18 percent year-over-year in the US in October, leading to a prediction of 15 to 16 million units for the quarter globally. Apple's iPod lineup has been on an extended decline for years, driven down by the iPhone and more recently the iPad. Munster notes, though, that October sales were better than the consensus for the quarter, which calls for units to be down 20 percent to 15.5 million.
