Intel, MasterCard team on NFC payments for ultrabooks

updated 12:05 pm EST, Mon November 14, 2011

Intel and MasterCard will bring NFC to ultrabooks

Intel and MasterCard on Monday announced a partnership for NFC on computers that would make online shopping more secure and a better overall experience. Users of ultrabooks are targeted, but future Intel-powered PCs will also benefit from the multi-year agreement, the companies said. The undertaking will focus on bringing MasterCard's NFC-based PayPass technology and Intel's Identity Protection Technology to Ultrabooks.

Under the vision, buyers could tap their PayPass-enabled credit cards, tags or smartphones on the reader built into the ultrabook just as they would at a store. The idea is to make payments safe from hackers and malware.

Ultrabooks are a notebook category invented by Intel and aims to mimic the MacBook Air in terms of size and speed. Non-Apple sales have been low, however, as they often carry similar prices but don't necessarily match the build quality or public profile of the Air.
