AMD releases 16-core Opteron 6200

updated 02:40 pm EST, Mon November 14, 2011

AMD officially releases 16-core Opteron 6200 CPUs

Chipmaker AMD has began shipping its Opteron 6200- and 4200-series processors, formerly known as Interlagos and Valencia, respectively. The former is advertised as having 16 cores, though they are based on Bulldozer architecture that include eight two-core modules. Meant for enterprise-grade servers, AMD promises 84 percent better performance and 72 percent more memory bandwidth.

There are 18 chips released in total, with ten from the 6200 series ranging in clock speeds from 1.6GHz to 3.3GHz. The 4200-series has the remaining eight, with the same clock speed spread. One of the main differences between the 4200s and 6200s is the 8MB of L3 cache versus 16MB in the latter chips.

Meanwhile, 2012 will see the release of the AMD Opteron 3000-series platform. The first entry will be the code-named Zurich part, with four to eight cores. These chips are meant for ultra-dense, ultra-low power 1P web hosting and web serving as well as for micro servers. The Zurich chip will use the new Socket AM3+.
