New mirrorless camera grabs public's attention

Nikon is faced with a new supply shortage due to the popularity of its 1 series cameras. While the company has faced production shortfalls for its DSLRs and lenses as a result of the recent flooding in Thailand, the new mirrorless interchangeable hasn't been affected at all and has been at full capacity. Interest has been so high that the supply hasn't kept up with the demand, Nikon said.

Nikon reports that sales for the camera have been strong in all regions. The camera is assembled in Nikon's Chinese facilities, so the floods in Thailand have not impacted their manufacture. The company saw it not just mitigating the losses but possibly compensating for them entirely. Production of the 1 series is increasing to compensate, the camera designer said.

The product line is a new design for the company. It uses a new format, known as CX. In current form, it uses a 2.7X crop factor, 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and a dual-core Expeed 3 processor. The addition lets it get image quality better than its sensor size would suggest and produces a very fast autofocusing system as well as unique abilities to shoot still photos during HD video recording.
