Motorola Droid RAZR cuts back on non-removable bloat apps

updated 02:10 pm EST, Thu November 10, 2011

Motorola, Verizon ease up on unwanted apps in RAZR

Motorola's near-shipping Droid RAZR will back off of the tendency towards non-removable carrier apps, Electronista and others can confirm. Apps that Motorola and Verizon install, even the Blockbuster video and GoToMeeting apps, can be uninstalled outright. Others, including on other carriers, can be hidden to get rid of unwanted apps from the view without technically deleting them.

On Verizon, the Droid RAZR has fewer of Verizon's V Cast media apps.

The decision may reflect a slowly growing perception among carriers and hardware makers that they had crossed the line of tolerance for non-removable apps. Sprint was one of the first to take action and said that it had a positive reaction to cleaning up that was leading it to ship at least its Android phones with less extra software.

Verizon carries the Droid RAZR in stores on Friday at 11:11AM for $300 on a two-year contract. Rogers will be selling it in Canada next week for $150, albeit in a longer three-year deal. [cross-checks via Droid-Life]

    Close but no cigar

Don't put the friggin' apps on there in the first place!

Why do I have to remove adware? If I want Blockbuster, I can go to the app store and get it.

And, don't think it's a privilege because I can hide your bloatware. I don't want it. I don't want it on my phone. And, I don't merely want to sweep it under the carpet and pretend it isn't' there.
