HP planning all-hands meeting to decide on webOS

HP may decide Tuesday on webOS outcome

HP may have a conclusion on the fate of the webOS group Tuesday night, a leak may have uncovered. An "all-hands meeting" is supposedly happening in the evening where webOS' outcome would "likely" be made public, The Verge heard. CEO Meg Whitman would head up the meeting, which would wait until around 7:30PM Eastern and past the market close.

The company has denied shutting down the webOS team, but it has left room open for either a significant restructuring or an outright sale. Recent rumors have raised the possibility of a sale to Oracle, while Sony's mobile group has refused to rule it out.

Whitman originally claimed there would be no changes to plans from ousted CEO Leo Apotheker, who wanted an end to webOS hardware and possibly to PCs under claims of an iPad effect. The newcomer changed direction and led to HP keeping its PC group even as it moved much faster than Apotheker had wanted to go on his own decisions. WebOS won't necessarily see the same reversal as its share was collapsing even before Apotheker's decision to quit.

The OS was once seen as HP's chance to get an iPhone-like integration of hardware and software after years of failing to get ground by licensing Windows Mobile. Delayed launches, build quality issues, and rushed software led to sinking sales and, in the TouchPad's case, large volumes of unsold stock that's just now being emptied out.
