Amazon plans full retail push for Kindle Fire, other Kindles

updated 09:15 pm EST, Tue November 8, 2011

Amazon to sell all new Kindles in stores Nov. 15

Amazon said Tuesday that it planned to bring all of its new Kindles to retail in sync with the Kindle Fire's November 15 ship date. Both the Android tablet as well as the regular Kindle and Kindle Touch will all be in stores at the same prices, including the $149 3G Kindle Touch. Best Buy, Office Depot, Radio Shack, Sam's Club, Staples, Target, and Walmart will all have them in stock.

The expansion should be one of Amazon's largest ever in retail, where it will bring four new models at once to stores.

For Amazon, the Kindle Fire appearance is the most significant and will be a test of whether it can succeed in Android tablets at retail where others have failed. Others that have leaned mostly on retail have sold little and have even seen sales drop, with Motorola down to 100,000 Xooms. High prices and pressure to get 3G or 4G contracts have usually steered customers towards the iPad. The $199 price of the Wi-Fi only Kindle Fire could skirt around the problems.

Amazon should have little trouble with initial Kindle Fire sales. The online shop is increasing shipments by millions to accommodate orders. E-paper Kindles are also selling well, owing both to a mix of an upgrade and a lower price that has cracked the $100 barrier for two models.
