Jailbreakers enable panorama photography feature in iOS 5

updated 10:30 pm EST, Mon November 7, 2011

Feature follows Android 4.0 development

Corroborating earlier reports, iPhone jailbreakers have reportedly enabled the panoramic photography feature that was first spotted in iOS 5 betas. Screenshots posted on 9to5Mac suggest the panorama assistant is functional at a basic level, composing a seamless mosaic as users sweep the device across a large area.

Google beat Apple to the official introduction for panoramic photography on a mobile OS, as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich adds a single-motion panorama mode that also enables users to capture a perspective much wider than the camera's own field of view.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is expected to arrive on the market with Ice Cream Sandwich and the panorama feature within the next few weeks. Apple has yet to formally confirm plans to enable the same feature in iOS, leaving its fate uncertain.

I wonder why it's not already here? Is it tied to flash use with panorama (and battery life), image file size, what? Seems silly not to have it part of the "I'm an iPhone and this is what I do." aspect of the product. Instead, we've all bought $0.99 apps to get the feature (and thanks to you app developers who provided the service!). Strange to me, that's all.
