US Cellular next to jump to LTE

US Cellular has become the next major US carrier to plan out an upgrade to LTE-based 4G. The regional carrier plans to deploy the faster network starting from early 2012 and plans to cover a handful of cities in Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, North Carolina, Texas, and Oklahoma. Among the highlight will be Des Moines, Greenville, Milauwkee, and Portland, although most will have more than one city covered.

The carrier plans to pick up LTE smartphones at about the same time. Which models weren't said, although US Cellular's use of a CDMA voice network means it's most likely to get phones similar to those at Verizon. Among the options will be the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus and Motorola's RAZR.

Including the upcoming plans for Sprint's LTE switch, US Cellular represents the fifth major US carrier to have either launched or committed to an LTE upgrade. T-Mobile is the largest carrier not adopting LTE and is currently counting on AT&T's currently in doubt takeover to give its customers full 4G speeds, although its 42Mbps 3G is fast enough to offset some of the difference.
