Forum roundup: MBP ask a desktop?

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Fri November 4, 2011

Topics from the forums.

Yesterday one Fresh-Faced Recruit started a thread asking if others thought a MBP might make a good desktop computer after the recent death of their PC. Also yesterday David2213 had some questions about documents on iPad in this thread.

JackDooner is having some trouble with the second generation Apple TV and has turned to the forums for some advice. Earlier this week one Fresh-Faced Recruit started a thread looking for some help with GD Library with Freetype2 installation issues. When one Professional Poster had problems with a Thunderbolt Mac mini they turned to the forums for some assistance.

They clearly typo'ed 'as' to 'ask'.

To answer the question, no, a MBP does not make a very good permanent desktop. It's a hassle to deal with the lid and an external monitor. My parents use a MBP as their desktop, and they're constantly leaving it running because they think closing the lid will put it to sleep (and it usually does), but then wake it up with the external keyboard and mouse, and it stays running with the lid closed for days at a time, which is not good for ventillation, since the keyboard area is used to dissipate heat. Now that their MBP is dying, I've suggested they replace it with a Mac Mini, since they already have a full USB keyboard, mouse and a monitor, and they'll be much better off.

If you need to be setting up a workstation in various locations on a regular basis, then by all means, a MBP is suitable, but otherwise, get a Mac Mini if you already have a nice monitor, or an iMac otherwise, and consider buying an iPad for casual mobile use.

    Question, WiseWeasel.

"Now that their MBP is dying, I've suggested they replace it with a Mac Mini, since they already have a full USB keyboard, mouse and a monitor, and they'll be much better off.?

Do they also already have speakers, microphone, camera, and a high tolerance for cable clutter on the desktop? If not, it may be worth the step up to an iMac, which will also come with a Magic Trackpad or multitouch Magic Mouse to take advantage of Lion.
