Nokia N9 goes on sale in US through imports

Nokia N9 unlocked on sale at Expansys

Nokia's N9 has been given an indirect route to the US through listings at Expansys' American shop. The phone is available in every trim it has in Europe, including 16GB and 64GB models in black, cyan, and magenta. Every version is unlocked and will work on 3G for both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Unusually, price varies by the color. The black 16GB N9 is the cheapest, at $690. Picking the cyan or magenta of the same storage bumps the price to $780, while the 64GB versions are closer at $920 to $925.

All of them have optional accessories such as cases and screen protectors.

The N9 is Nokia's first and possibly last MeeGo smartphone. Its OS is rare in having a 'buttonless' interface where swipes control app navigation, multitasking, and other basics. The hardware is the blueprint for the Lumia 800 Windows Phone flagship and shares its eight-megapixel f2.2 camera, although it carries a slower 1GHz processor.

    What should have been

The iPhone proprietary curated system and the truly open source/open platform Meego should have been the right market mix. Instead we are left with Android open but closed platform and MS's Windows everywhere fluffy WinMo kicking Meego out of the market.
Let's hope Meego doesn't disappear completely.
