Google+ gets YouTube slider, new Chrome extensions

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Thu November 3, 2011

Offers tighter integration between apps

Google has updated Google+ to more tightly integrate the app with two other web and desktop apps, YouTube and Chrome. For YouTube, the company has added a "slider" to make it easier for an individual to share personal videos with members of their circles. Google has also added a +1 button and notification button to Chrome to help users stay in touch with their circles as well.

The slider brings YouTube directly into Google+. It's launched by mousing over a new YouTube icon in the upper right corner of the app. A new window slides open, asking the viewer "What would you like to play?" A successful result can start playing from a list of related videos. Google has also boosted Google+ so that people in an individual's circle can open up a YouTube playlist directly from that individual's posts. As a final enhancement, Google has started to include YouTube playlists in Google+ search results.

Google has given its browser Chrome two new enhancements to link it more directly back to Google+. The first is a +1 button. This lets a Chrome user +1 any webpage to share it within their circles. Chrome also now sports a notifications icon. Clicking on it opens a pop-up window that lets the viewer check on their Google+ notifications while browsing.

Internet Explorer gets the Chrome features for users who have the Google Toolbar installed. These icons are not available to Firefox users since the Google Toolbar is only supported on Firefox releases from 4.0 and earlier. Firefox is currently up to 7.0.
