Avid debuts new versions of Media Composer, other key titles

updated 03:10 pm EDT, Thu November 3, 2011

Company 'investigating' Mac App Store

Avid has announced several major software updates, most notably Media Composer 6. The video editor has switched to a new 64-bit architecture, and sports an overhauled interface designed to speed up tasks. Some other changes include native ProRes compatibility, support for Avid Open I/O-compatible third-party hardware, new stereoscopic and and Artist Color tools, and the ability to create 5.1 or 7.1 surround mixes without outside tools.

Symphony 6 and NewsCutter 10 share the same architectural and interface improvements as Media Composer. Symphony, a comprehensive video editing and finishing suite, in fact shares all of Media Composer's enhancements. NewsCutter is aimed more explicitly at broadcast news production.

All of the upgraded programs are due to ship on November 15th. Media Composer 6 prices will start at $2,499 new, or $299 as an upgrade; an Academic edition will cost $295. NewsCutter 10 will be $2,499 new or $499 as an upgrade, while Symphony 6 will generally be the most expensive of the bunch, set at $5,999 new or $499 in upgrade form.
