Samsung Galaxy Tab for Verizon gets Android 2.3 a year late

updated 01:05 pm EDT, Mon October 31, 2011

Verizon finally updates Galaxy Tab to older OS

Verizon belatedly addressed its very first tablet with an update for the original Galaxy Tab. The slate is now getting Android 2.3.5, putting it on the just outgoing OS. In return for the wait, users get Verizon tools to track or change their data plans and support for prepaid data instead of the subscription that was required for 3G until now.

Most of the upgrades are those that come with the OS. The Galaxy Tab now gets a more modern copy-and-paste text interface as well as front camera video support. A download manager and security patches come with the OS fix.

Verizon hasn't said when the update will push out to users.

The update leaves the Verizon Galaxy Tab as one of the more poorly supported mainstream tablets. It receives 2.3 just as Android 4.0 will land on its first shipping hardware, the Galaxy Nexus. It's not clear if the Galaxy Tab will have the performance to support 4.0, but most of Samsung's focus is on upgrading higher-end devices and could see any updates several months away at best.
