Streak becomes first US defense-certified Android device

Device meets DISA criteria

Dell's Streak 5 tablet has reportedly become the first Android device to receive official certification for the US Department of Defense. Although the device is no longer sold to the general public, Dell has reworked the tablet software to improve security. The adaptations have enabled the device to meet Defense Information Systems Agency criteria for use with secure but unclassified communications.

The company worked directly with the DISA to implement the security enhancements necessary for DoD communication. The Streak 5 now enables users to remotely wipe data, lock the device after a number of invalid passwords, and remotely control security levels.

Dell suggests the Streak 5's DISA certification opens the door for the company's upcoming Android devices to be utilized by government agencies. Details surrounding the future devices have yet to be revealed, however. [via Defense Systems]
