Amtrak now offers Wi-Fi on 60 percent of trains

US intercity railway operator Amtrak has once again just expanded the Wi-Fi network it began offering nearly two years ago to travelers. There have been 12 East Coast routes added, with the addition making 60 percent of all Amtrak routes offering Wi-Fi. The company has plans to expand further, upping that total to 75 percent.

The new routes include Northeast Regional between Virginia and Boston, Keystone Service that connects New York, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, and Empire Service that links New York, Albany, and Buffalo. Less major new routes include the Carolinian, the Downeaster, the Ethan Allen Express, the New Haven-Springfield Shuttle, and the Vermonter. Four others, Adirondack, Maple Leaf, Palmetto, and the Pennsylvanian, offer Wi-Fi hotspots only in marked cars.

The next expansion will be in California, with the Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner and San Joaquin trains getting Wi-Fi before year's end. [via TechCrunch]
