Motorola to cut 800 jobs after tough results

Motorola drops jobs to stem losses

Motorola in a filing on Friday said it was cutting 800 jobs in the wake of its poor summer results. The company didn't outline which divisions had been affected. It stressed that the cuts weren't related to Google's proposed acquisition of the company and were just to trim expenses.

The company "continues to focus on improving its financial performance by taking actions to manage the company's costs," spokeswoman Jennifer Weyrauch-Erickson said.

Cutting the positions was expected to cost a total of $31 million before it would produce savings.

While Motorola's losses weren't significantly worse than a year ago, they came after sales at its most important divisions fell short. Along with shipping just 400,000 more smartphones compared to the spring, its Xoom shipments fell to just 100,000 units, less than half the tablets it managed in its truncated launch quarter.
