Dolphin Browser creators reject claims of data snooping

Claims used to toggle Webzine pages, never stored

Earlier this week, it was alleged that the Dolphin Browser app, popular with many Android phone and tablet users, was collecting personal information from its users when they accessed the browser's Webzine tab. Dolphin has acknowledged that the information was actually collected, but that it was never stored on Dolphin's servers. In its blog, Dolphin claimed that the practice has been temporarily suspended.

The situation came to light in a posting on XDA-Developers. The site, dedicated to the Android and Windows Phone developers' community, claimed that Dolphin 7.0 transmitted information for every link, search and page to the Webzine.

In its response, Dolphin admitted that, in Dolphin HD for Android 7.0, browsing information was relayed to a Webzine-specific URL. Dolphin explained that one of the new features of the browser, Toggle Webzine, lets users see the current webpage as an optimized Webzine. In order to switch back and forth, the app compared the current URL with a database stored on Dolphin's servers.

Dolphin insisted that the personal data was never stored, but rather used to cross-index to see if a Webzine for the current site existed. If not, it immediately converted the site to Dolphin's Webzine format. If it did, then it was called up from the database. The developer was emphatic that no personal information was stored on the servers.

Dolphin believed that Toggle Webzine was still helpful to users, and planned to still offer it, but only if the user chose to opt in.
