Beluga stops November 11 as Facebook Messenger takes over

updated 04:10 pm EDT, Fri October 28, 2011

Beluga starts shut down after Facebook deal

The messaging app team from Beluga warned Friday that the iOS app would be phased out in the transition to Facebook Messenger. Regular chat will stop November 11, when access turns to read-only. An archive of messages will be available until an absolute shutdown on December 15.

Developers stressed that they could get the core features in the Facebook app, which was now on Android and BlackBerry.

Facebook bought Beluga just a few months after its December 2010 launch to underpin what would later become a unified messaging system at the social network. It lets users get live messages across devices as well as on the web.
